I am actually a bit surprised that I added this section at all because, although I really enjoy drawing or doodling or whatever and even though I find it really satisfying, I very rarely find the time to sit down and draw. Rather, I usually end up scribbling a few ideas onto a piece of paper and that’s it. That said, when I do make the time, I’m usually able to get my ideas down into a form that makes sense and will translate into a photograph, film or painting.
I’m a bit of a hoarder and tend to keep sketches and, when we used to use them, polaroids from our shoots. So, in many cases, you can see the sketch, the polaroid and the finished item. This worked for the Dusk… and Her Embrace shoot for Cradle of Filth in particular, as I had to spend more time on my drawings because they were for a client. It also worked well for my Metal Vamps shoot and for a series of Satanic nun-themed images that I did as, in both cases, I spent a while sketching and working on the ideas.
Outside of ‘work’ related imagery, I also draw a lot for pictures and paintings that I have in mind, but which are yet to be completed. I actually naively thought that my work would leave me time to devote to this but the reality has meant that I have less and less time and is something that I am determined to address.
